In his new role, Kobrin will work with IMT technology partners and customers in developing workflows for the efficient production, management and distribution of digital media content.
“Rob Kobrin has worked at the forefront of technology throughout his career, and he understands digital media technology from the point of view of the manufacturer, the systems integrator and the user. That makes him uniquely qualified to work with our customers in meeting the complex challenge of choosing and implementing the right technology to make their work proceed smoothly and help their businesses grow,” said IMT CEO Bruce Lyon.
Kobrin has been working as an independent technology consultant since 2002, assisting motion picture studios, technology manufacturers and systems integrators with workflow design, product development and other issues. He also worked with several venture capital firms in evaluating merger and acquisition opportunities. He initiated Avid’s successful Partners and Developers Program, and also spearheaded integration between the company’s various product lines.
Kobrin began his career as an editor and was one of the first editors to make the switch to digital technology. His credits included Needful Things for Castle Rock, one of the first studio films to be cut with Avid’s Media Composer. He also edited the Paramount film Virtuosity, which was the first film to employ a networked workflow for post production.
Kobrin’s early experience with digital editing systems led him to serve in a consultant’s
role for a number of content producers, equipment manufactures and media networks. Among them were CBS, Lucasfilm, MGM, Avid, Digidesign, AT&T, Media One and Media Net. Along the way, he developed broad expertise in such areas as workflows, storage, media formats, media management and networking. He became one of the founders of Open Media Framework Initiative and served on the board of the Advanced Authoring Format Association.
In discussing his move to IMT, Kobrin said that was looking for an opportunity to combine his expertise in information technologies with his experience in the media industry. “IMT presents an opportunity to bring the best resources of the IT world to the media world,” he said. “Understanding the legacies and traditions of the media industry, and the daily challenges faced by editors and facility managers, IMT is uniquely positioned to bring the most advanced and productive technologies to our community.
